San Francisco Bay Area Musician Derek Smith has been entertaining audiences for more than 10 years through his innovative music that combines the melodic brightness of the Caribbean steel drum with the driving rhythms of Latin Jazz. Smith's unique sound is inspired by legendary musicians like Reggae superstar Bob Marley, mambo king Tito Puente, Latin Jazz vibraphone great Cal Tjader, and calypso master Lord Kitchener. The influence of such renown players has led Smith to create an original musical experience that can be described as soulful and joyous.
Smith's steel drum bands are available to travel to events and perform for wedding ceremonies and receptions. Band formats include solo, duo, trio, quartet, quintet, sextet (1-6 musicians). Musical styles include Caribbean, Latin jazz, Calypso, Reggae, and popular music. Steel drums are great for either background or dance music. Steel drum bands can play with or without electricity or amplification.
Popular wedding songs sound beautiful on the steel pans: Pachelbel's Cannon in D Major, Here Comes The Bride (Bridal Chorus), Bridal March.
