First, let me say that Brilliant Earth does the right thing. It is impressive to find a company so dedicated to sustainability and social responsibility.
Unfortunately, in our case, quality and customer service were both sacrificed. My fiance purchased a beautiful ring from Brilliant Earth. After wearing the ring for less than 8 months, the ring became egg shaped from basic every day wear.
While at Brilliant Earth to choose a wedding ring, I showed the engagement ring to the salesperson who informed me that it would be an easy fix. I purchased a wedding band and left the engagement ring. Two days later, we were informed that it would cost $450 to re-set the ring that I had so "badly damaged." This charge was on top of the ring I had just purchased as well as a second ring my fiance was purchasing as a surprise to me. The problem to us in this case is two-fold.
First, a well crafted ring should not be so damaged from every day wear that it must be re-set within 8 months of wear. We were either being ripped off from what should have been an easy re-shaping, or I cannot believe that this ring was well made.
Second, the charge to fix the ring was on top of close to $4,000 of additional wedding bands that we were purchasing at the time. We attempted to negotiate the re-setting cost and asked Brilliant Earth to stand by their work. Brilliant Earth informed us that it would cost that much for the platinum needed to re-set the ring after the existing metal was reclaimed and refused to negotiate. In reading through other Yelp.com comments (and other sites), I'd like to point out that issues of ring quality and craftsmanship have been mentioned by other reviewers.
In the end, we had the ring re-shaped for free and have no damage to the stone settings. Obviously, we canceled the additional wedding ring orders, and Brilliant Earth credited our purchases and shipped the ring to me within a week.
Needless to say, we had initially thought Brilliant Earth would be a lifetime source for gifts and will no longer purchase from them.
