They only sell good products, nothing that will break or sucks, which is nice!
Much of the criticism directed at the new California Academy of Sciences addresses how the museum seems to lack "character" and "personality". Some say it feels empty. After much thought I have decided that these observations fall short of the bigger picture of what this prized San Francisco institution is currently undertaking. Some will draw comparisons to the Academy buildings that existed in Golden Gate Park since 1916, when it first moved to the park from its downtown SF location. And I say such comparisons are like comparing the "personality" and "character" of an old man and a baby. The old Academy had almost 90 years to develop and grow. It had the benefit of having generation after generation of scientists, exhibitors and educators who spent careers shaping it into what we most recently remember of it in 2003 when it closed its doors for the last time. Can you compare that to a brand new building and expect the same richness and sense of history? No, but what you can see is the potential for what this museum will be for the next 100 years in the lifetime of our city. If it feels "empty" to you, that is because it is a blank slate that will be transformed slowly over time into another masterpiece, just as the old one was, because it is alive. And that concept, I think, fits in nicely with what we learn at the Academy about the natural sciences.
