I am an admitted ice cream snob and I've been to many of the great ice cream spots in the country. Bi-Rite is as good as ice cream gets - possibly better than (any very similar to) Toscanini's in Cambridge, MA. They certainly have the best quality ice cream in the Bay Area right now. I recommend their salted caramel (which does not rival Toscanini's burnt caramel), the banana (not a flavor I usually like, but truly excellent here) or the strawberry. Seriously blows away the also-great Ici (on College Ave)
The best sundaes in the bay area. Sadly, the crab sandwiches do not compare to what they were able to serve up in the 70s (think 1-1/2 inch high pile of today's-catch crab on grilled sourdough bread), but the sundaes are exactly as great as they always were. You might be frightened the first time, when they deliver a sundae bigger than your head, but you'll get used to it. My faves: the black & tan with all toasted almond ice cream. When I was younger I preferred the black & white. But now I just can't get enough of their perfect caramel sauce. Nice toasty flavor. The ice cream is made on location, the way it should be. Just wanted to add - a great thing about Fenton's is that (unlike in the 70s) you don't have to stand in line that snakes around the block to get in. But you will still have to wait if you go weekend evenings. Too bad they don't have a bigger parking lot - but street parking is not too bad, just circle off Piedmont ave. Darn, I need my Fenton's fix - I haven't had any since yesterday!
I've never been very impressed by the espresso drinks served here (*cough* snob!) but this is a great place to hang. I particularly like going to the music nights on Fridays. Good selection of treats too. If you're at Dolores Park and need a warm up, this is probably you're best bet.
